Home, Tree and Me

They say that home is where the heart is, but I would say home is where heart and tree is. I can not imagine living in a house without a tree.

At the age of 20 I married my husband, who was in a transferable job. My first marital home was a ‘basha’. It is a kind of temporary, makeshift accommodation. It has brick walls and floor , but thatched roof. Roof was home to many rat families, who would pay us a visit at odd hours or invite themselves over meals. He had a busy schedule, but I never felt lonely. Mango tree in the front yard was a great company. Every evening a colony of birds would perch on its branches.

After a few months we shifted to another house. It was a proper furnished accommodation. My husband was happy , but I missed my Basha friends and the Mango tree missed the early morning jungle sounds and chirping of birds. But not the one to remain in low spirits for a long time , i soon established a relationship with a row of palm trees on the road side. Watching them gave me a strange pleasure.

Soon we moved to another station and here we had a house, I always dreamed of. It had a huge lawn and a big back yard to grow vegetables. But the best thing i liked about that house was a bush of ‘ night queen’ outside our bedroom window. Its sweet smell would fill the room at night.By now my love for trees and plants had rubbed off my husband.

He moved to different stations during his course of service. I moved with him. We raised family. We got the opportunity to stay in different houses and in different climates. But every house had at least one huge shady tree. Having a tree in the house gave me a sense of calm and happiness.

In one house there was no tree. Nothing would grow there. There was a small bed of cactus. I tried planting some seasonal flowers an grow vegetables. But failed. There we used to sleep on the roof. And me and my younger son would watch the neighbours eucalyptus tree swaying in the air.It gave me peace. But one day neighbours decided to cut down the tree. That night and following nights, I could not sleep on the roof. I was happy to move out of that house.

Now he is retired. We are staying in a flat. I was very upset till my younger son brought home a few potted plants. They are no substitute to a big tree, but they do add a serenity to the atmosphere. I dream of a small house surrounded by trees. I wonder how can people cut down these beautiful companions for selfish motives.

I have often driven by homes that have barren yards. No bushes, no flowers and no trees, and wondered how they could stand to live like that. I am fortunate enough to live on 13 acres next door to a state park. Our woods are beautiful! Life would be so dull without that expanse of green and all the squirrels barking.

I loved the story. My wife and I both are retired military and we really could not live without our trees. The sad fact is in older town people (older people) are scared into cutting down their old trees or are too old to care for them. I hate to see a beautiful tree cut down. We can look online at a shot of our home from a satellite and all you can see is trees and we like it that way.

I consider plants and trees to be essential to my life. They provide oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide and most of all calm my soul. I can’t be comfortable in a place without trees and plants. Our rental home has trees outside and many of our plants inside and out. I even have a prayer plant beside our garbage can to help absorp odors and it works great. The green of plants and trees is soothing to the soul and essential to my life.

This story reminds me of when my parents moved into their house. My grandfather gave them six trees and planted them down the middle of the backyard. My mother moved the trees to the back of the yard. I spent my childhood playing in the “forest”.

I know exactly what you mean. Whenever I move, I need to be sure there is a tree, perferably a rather large, full tree near at least one window. I love to watch birds. I feed wild birds. I know how much I would miss this activity if I ever had to move to a house with no tree.

Your article is great! You told about the house without tree is useless.i love nature but my bad luck i didnt get house with garden or trees I will change my house soon with garden.

The tree’s and flowers are the best part of any yard. Without a good shade tree how can one enjoy sitting outside on a nice summer day. With shade trees also bring’s other animal’s which I love critter’s watching play is neat.

I feel the same way that you do about trees. I have some gorgeous trees in my neighbors yard that I love to look at when in full blossom or even when barren during the winter. I couldn’t imagine not having a tree around at all for the birds to use or to shade us from the heat.

I would love to have a mango tree in my yard! I eat those things like candy. One of the other things I love about having a tree is that they are complementary to humans. They absorb our carbon dioxide and give us the oxygen we need to breathe. If I could I’d also want a weeping willow. Those trees are gorgeous.

I can not imagine living in a area where the homes did not have trees in the yards, when we were looking to buy our first home one of the “must haves” was a yard with trees and not just any trees I was looking for large old trees that had been around forever, those are the ones that you like to curl up on a blanket with a good book on a summer afternoon under it.

There is no way I could live in a house that does not have any tree’s. They make a house bright and stand out. They also provide a nice place to sit and relax in the sun.

I live in a tropical climate and we have lots of fruits trees in the back yard. I get so much joy from having the privelage to enjoy hand picking these fruits and I love to take pictures of the fruits in the trees and it’s flowers as well. They provide lots of shade in the heat of the day and there are many baby iguanas running all over the branches these days. Trees are essential, not only for fresh air but they beautify your surroundings. I love your story but it was sad to hear of the place where you couldn’t grow anything. I hope you get your little house surrounded with trees, it’s not to late.

I love trees too. Sadly, here in CA there is a drought, so I would need to find drought resistant trees, because the others would take too much water which we do not have. Palm trees are great for this climate and they look nice swaying in the evening breeze.
