It is essential for all the rooms in your house to have adequate lighting. However, you might want to enhance the overall attractiveness of certain rooms by changing the lighting fixtures in your house.

Installing a chandelier fixture is one of the simplest ways to do this. Chandeliers are available in a wide variety of designs and sizes to suit all of your needs. This type of lighting will enhance the beauty of your home and provide all the light you will need.

One of the numerous advantages of chandeliers however is having the ability to control the amount of light you receive. For example, you may want to dim the lights when you’re not home without having to leave the house in complete darkness. Or you may wish to have a romantic dinner or spend some time snuggling in front of the fireplace. You can easily go from very low to full lighting by using the controls on the lighting system.

The types of switches vary depending on the fixture you choose. Some lighting systems are equipped with a dial that you can rotate while other systems use a mechanism that moves up and down along the bracket. In any case you will easily be able to control how much lighting you receive. For some occasions you will need the room to be bright and full of light. Even with a chandelier you will be able get all of the lighting you need.

When looking for a chandelier you should consider two major factors. To start with, what style or design do you want? Some homeowners prefer an antique design while other individuals prefer a more contemporary look. Crystal chandelier fixtures are still very popular these days. Your decision will also be influenced by how much space is available for displaying the chandelier.

Pricing appears to be extremely important with customers these days. Some chandelier fixtures cost several hundred dollars. Other fixtures may cost several thousands of dollars although the more expensive fixtures are usually used in commercial establishments like ballrooms and hotels instead of private houses.

Do not rush to make a decision. Take your time to determine which type of lighting will be the best option. You should definitely choose a fixture that is aesthetically pleasing to you. This is a decision that only you can make for your home. Make sure to have fun with your choice of chandelier.

It is also important to choose a chandelier that will provide the proper amount of lighting for your needs. It is helpful to see the chandelier on display somewhere with the lighting and compare in the online world.

It’s mid-summer and if you like to do a little yard work as relaxing destressing do-it-yourself therapy like I do, you might be at a loss right now.

I spent a lot of time in the yard earlier in the summer. I had to re-plant some patchy grass and refresh the piles and piles of red cedar mulch that was looking faded and compressed. Hint- don’t use the red mulch! It fades to a pinkish orange by spring, and has to be replaced. I added some hostas in bare areas and planted a few pansies. I re-filled the big urns at the end of the sidewalk with marigolds and ivy that now overflows the edges quite nicely.

Now my lawn looks good, the grass has taken hold and matured, the weeds are at bay and the hostas that the previous owner planted have grown to full size and blossomed. Everything is in a nice full growth holding pattern and we have had enough rain so I have not even had to go out and water. So what the heck am I going to do for fun puttering in the yard? I rode my bike around town a few weeks ago and got some great ideas for dressing up the doorstep. Then I took myself right down to the local thrift store to look for containers for plants. Yes, I could have gone to the local garden store, but why pay full price for average looking pots?

Honestly, I must have 30 pots in the basement that I can pull out if I’m looking for plain pots. No, I went off in search of the unusual containers to fill with flowers. I found a variety of baskets at the thrift store, each large enough to hold a pot of flowers. I also purchased a medium sized framed mirror, a big ceramic statue of a dolphin, and a adorable little wicker dresser.

Next I went to the garden store and bought bedding plants, in colors to correspond with and contrast the trim on the house, and potting soil. I took my car full of fun stuff home and got to it. I pulled the dresser drawers partway out and filled them with potting soil and added plants, the tallest ones in the bottom most drawer, the ivy in the top so it can cascade down the front of the tiny dresser.

I took the rest of the bedding plants, put them in pots and plopped them into baskets. I arranged them on the door step, small baskets on the steps leading up to the porch, then off to the side on the porch the dresser with mirror above it on the wall and dolphin sitting on it with a small potted plant beside. This project took a weekend and came out looking fantastic!

Do you love the balmy breezes, long days and sunny skies of summer? Are you really a beach bum at heart? Well, you can keep that summer feeling all year long through the choices you make when you decorate your home.

The colors, furniture and accessories you choose will create the atmosphere that soothes your soul. Summer colors are cool, light and airy. Pick your palette from nature using the aquas, greens and blues of the sea, the tans and beiges of the sand and seashells on the beach, the blues from the summer sky and white from the wispy clouds. Rainbows, palm trees, and sunsets provide additional color selections. Your wall colors are the main source of color in your room and create the background for your evolving design, so choose carefully.

You will want your furniture to be comfortable and fun. Choose wicker, rattan or painted wood - white or a color to coordinate or contrast with your wall colors but still sticking to your summer palette. Just about any furniture you have on hand can be adapted to fit into your summer theme. After all, summer cottages were usually furnished with left overs from a family’s year round home. Amazing transformations occur with some fabric and a little paint.

You can really have fun with upholstery and pillows. Choose solid colors for your upholstery if that is what you like and then do pillows in tropical or beachy prints like palm trees, exotic florals, flip flops, seashells, or tropical fish. Or, if you are a more daring, adventurous decorator, use the fun, colorful prints for the upholstery. Your pillows might then be solids with trim, or textured solids or maybe solids with an applique, perhaps a single motif from your upholstery fabric.

Keep your window treatments light and airy to let in as much sun as possible. I like tab top or rod pocket sheers that you can pull aside or tie back to let in even more light. Using roller shades can solve any nighttime privacy issues.

Your rugs can also contribute to your summer theme. Choose sisal or lightweight cotton area rugs to match your color scheme. Braided rugs in summery colors are another good option.

Accessorizing is the best part! Choose what makes you feel good. Maybe you already have a collection that can be incorporated into your theme. Seashells, sea glass, beach rocks, and coral are the most obvious examples. Depending on your choices up to now, you might consider tropical fish or miniature palm trees. A wall grouping of sunset pictures or ocean or seaside scenes are definite options.

Just have fun with it, because, in the end, that will add to your enjoyment of the space. My favorite accessory is a six-foot pre lit palm tree that I bought four years ago to use as a Christmas tree. I decorated it with shells that I glittered and hung with gold cording. It was perfect!

I took the decorations off, but I never took the tree down. It makes me feel so good that I leave it up all year long. And, yes, I do decorate it every Christmas. Find your favorite accessory and start creating your own endless summer. As for me, I’m going to find some warm sand I can dig my toes into.

My little piece of gardening paradise is in Florida Zone 9b. I have enough room to indulge in quite a few plantings, but not so much that I have to have a riding lawnmower.

Zone 9b is a small area and has the blessings and problems of both the North and South Florida zones. We are just hot enough to wilt many attractive plants, cold enough to not be able to grow tropicals, although there is no ‘winter chill’ that so many plants require.

Of course many vendors sell plants to us backyard gardeners, and this is really a scary undertaking with a great many plant sources. The idea from the sellers point of view is to sell the plant. It’s up to the gardener to ask the right questions and have some idea of how valuable the information will be.

Yes indeed. It isn’t going to be easy. The questions asked have to provide useful information, be pertinent and timely. Which sends me to the internet for answers and failing that, at least enough information to know when I’m being handed a bunch of gobbledygook, one of my favorite sites is ‘Floridata’.

A lot of people realized that Florida was a very different area and that the information found online is valuable.

One of the greatest points on any information source is the pictures of the plants. Truly a picture is worth that thousand words when gardening is the topic. Other good sources of photos and learning experiences are catalogs from the major nurseries. These catalogs provide a good bit of information, but I have noticed that some photos are stock prints and have nothing to do with the actual plant being described. Be sure to carefully read all the description to see what size plant you are buying.

Sometimes I believe I understand why people like artificial plants. The plant is subjected to all kinds of stress when you are getting it to grow, then it doesn’t want to grow how you wanted it and of course, just as it seems to be rounding the bend and able to become a great plant in your yard, the insects, mold, mildew, rust and every other malady attack those plants.

Now you have to be a chemist to prepare the solutions to battle the enemy, a botanist is to know which plants should NOT get the particular spray you have prepared, and a witch doctor to keep the rain away long enough for the spray to ‘take’.

I frequently toy with the idea of letting the vines and bamboo take over the place. But then another email or catalog comes across my desk and I know I’ve got to find a place for just one more.

Window drapes are called by many names and are one the items in a living space that are stylish yet functional. The can add a splash of color to a room as well as provide so much needed privacy.

Window drapes are called curtains by some and window hangings by others. They can be as light, sheer, and see through as a piece of chiffon or they can be as heavy, think, and opaque as a cotton shift. The choice is up to the individual. They can come in any color of the rainbow and any shade of color.

They can be made in virtually any material known to man. They can made to fit any length of window from the smallest, thinnest opening to largest, widest piece of glass. Whether your end result for choosing a window drape is functionally or style, you can have both and be just as happy.

The room that the window drape will be hanging in will weigh on the decision of what to choose. If you are trying to cover a window that is in the front of your house, you may be heading more towards the privacy angle than the stylish angle. If you are choosing a window covering that can block outsides viewers from looking in, a lacy or sheer choice would not be the most practical. However, if you are trying to add a curtain to accent the color of your upstairs bedroom walls, then you have more of a range of options to choose from.

Even though there are extensive choices of pre-made window drapes or curtains, some may choose to have theirs specially made or make them themselves. Those that are handy with a sewing machine may most likely choose to make their own curtains or window drapes. They can take a personal pride in accomplishing this task all while being thrifty. Those that do chose to hand make their own curtains or window drapes can really personalize them by choosing the exact fabric they want from the thickness to the color or pattern.

Others that may not be so sewing machine savvy may choose to employ a specialist who has expertise in this field. The specialists will come out, measure your windows or opening, and then sit down with you to hear what you are looking for in an end result. They will work to make a product that you want and that are happy with.

Whatever route you choose to go, a window drape or curtain is a reflection of your taste and style you exhibit in your home.

They say that home is where the heart is, but I would say home is where heart and tree is. I can not imagine living in a house without a tree.

At the age of 20 I married my husband, who was in a transferable job. My first marital home was a ‘basha’. It is a kind of temporary, makeshift accommodation. It has brick walls and floor , but thatched roof. Roof was home to many rat families, who would pay us a visit at odd hours or invite themselves over meals. He had a busy schedule, but I never felt lonely. Mango tree in the front yard was a great company. Every evening a colony of birds would perch on its branches.

After a few months we shifted to another house. It was a proper furnished accommodation. My husband was happy , but I missed my Basha friends and the Mango tree missed the early morning jungle sounds and chirping of birds. But not the one to remain in low spirits for a long time , i soon established a relationship with a row of palm trees on the road side. Watching them gave me a strange pleasure.

Soon we moved to another station and here we had a house, I always dreamed of. It had a huge lawn and a big back yard to grow vegetables. But the best thing i liked about that house was a bush of ‘ night queen’ outside our bedroom window. Its sweet smell would fill the room at night.By now my love for trees and plants had rubbed off my husband.

He moved to different stations during his course of service. I moved with him. We raised family. We got the opportunity to stay in different houses and in different climates. But every house had at least one huge shady tree. Having a tree in the house gave me a sense of calm and happiness.

In one house there was no tree. Nothing would grow there. There was a small bed of cactus. I tried planting some seasonal flowers an grow vegetables. But failed. There we used to sleep on the roof. And me and my younger son would watch the neighbours eucalyptus tree swaying in the air.It gave me peace. But one day neighbours decided to cut down the tree. That night and following nights, I could not sleep on the roof. I was happy to move out of that house.

Now he is retired. We are staying in a flat. I was very upset till my younger son brought home a few potted plants. They are no substitute to a big tree, but they do add a serenity to the atmosphere. I dream of a small house surrounded by trees. I wonder how can people cut down these beautiful companions for selfish motives.

I took time out today to mow the yard before another group of thunderstorms blew through. It’s amazing to me how fast this lawn can grow in just a few days of nourishing rain.

Not only is the grass growing like weeds, so are the weeds! I just can’t seem to keep up with them.

Last summer I invested in a “green” mowing machine. By that I mean I went out and spent money on a brand new mower. This one is the old fashioned kind called a reel blade push mower. I have a small yard and I never have liked the sound of a mowing machine so I figured I would make the change. Now with the price of gas I’m glad I did. I still have the small gas powered mower but I don’t think I will ever use it again.

I’m crazy about my reel mower. I can mow the yard in flip flops with out worries of losing a foot. Every time I mow, I also get exercise. When I’m mowing it’s so quiet I can hear the birds. In fact, when I was mowing the front yard today, a nice fat robin sat down on the yard not five feet from me. My mower didn’t bother that bird at all.

I feel good about mowing without the use of fossil fuel, without polluting the air with another small gas engine. I wish all of my neighbors would switch to reel mowers and cut down on the noise pollution in the neighborhood.

I’ve found that I’m much more aware of what I am mowing when I’m mowing by my own power and in quiet. Today I saw a small black toad. I never would have noticed it with the roar and speed of a power mower. In fact, I probably would have run right over the little toad with that gas mower. Today I saw the tiny toad trying to hop out of the way and I just stood still in the quiet for a few moments while the little toad got its self off to a safer place. I noticed big daddy long legs and a flutter of grass hoppers, all easily escaping my slow mower.

I noticed the dampness of the grass and thought of last night’s rain, my damp basement and the prediction of more to come. I noticed the blooms in my garden that had started to fade and the bits of wood chips scattered about by animals. I was easily able to avoid a small contingent of toadstools that had popped up over night, again thinking that with a fast powerful gas mower, I might not have even noticed them.

It is high summer now in my zone 6b garden. All the hopes that were poured into planting those seeds and seedlings back in April and May are coming to fruition now in a bountiful harvest of squashes, cucumbers, lettuces, peas, potatoes, green beans, and onions, plus delightful herb offerings.

My plan for gardening intensively (more plants in smaller areas) and organically, with straw mulch six inches deep, has paid off in virtually no weeding chores and very little watering. My losses to the bugs consist of 2 squash plants, one summer, one winter, to the, what else?, Squash Bug. It is mid-July and the weather has consisted of plentiful showers, hot, sunny days, and not-so-hot, agreeable nights.

My efforts have been rewarded trying some new things in this “first” garden of the growing season. I followed my Uncle Bob’s advice in harvesting onions while the roots were still firmly attached so they would not rot. Propping the cucumber vines onto a trellis prevented them sprawling everywhere and made harvesting easier. A new variety of potatoes fulfilled its promise of resistance to the voracious potato beetle.

Since the season this year has been good for gardens, and since Uncle Bob told me his daddy always planted his “second” garden on June 21st, I have decided to plant a “second” or fall garden. Usually, at this point in the summer season, I have no desire to go out in the heat and humidity and work in the garden. This year, however, I know the garden’s potential still lies in unharvested plantings of fall vegetables. It is just as exciting to plan this garden as it was to plan the spring garden.

I have made space for the fall garden by removing the dried snow pea vines, pulling up the stalks of bolted lettuce plants, and determining what can grow in between the rows of corn and dying potato vines. This is accomplished through diligent searching of gardening websites, contacting the local county extension office, and talking to Uncle Bob. I knew I could plant cool season crops again such as spinach, lettuce, peas, and beets but was not aware that second plantings of tomatoes and squash would result in harvesting these foods well into the fall.

So, I’ve ordered the seeds for the fall plantings of beets, kale, lettuce, and spinach. I’ve set out my little cabbage plants. I’ve planted two short rows of seed onions left over from the spring planting. I’ll mulch and water, if necessary, and I’ll watch my fall garden grow.

And soon it will be time to start my winter garden.

Chandeliers have been around since the 15th Century and are very fascinating. People want to decorate their household and make it look like an older time period. The sight of hardwood floors and antique chandeliers in a Victorian house is breathtaking.

Many people have the problem locating antique chandeliers though. They do not know that many manufacturers in fact make new ones to look like antiques. You will be extremely happy when you see all the options you have to choose from.

You can also custom order a certain antique chandelier at some locations. If you don’t see what you want there they will make it for you. There is a quite lengthy wait, sometimes around several months, for your chandelier to be ready but it is worth the wait! Bring pictures of what you are looking for and it will really help the location.

The prices of these antique chandeliers vary depending on the type of materials they are made from. It is amazing to find out that the antiques are actually not much more expensive that the modern versions for sale. You will be able to change the rooms in your home to certain time periods you desire with these antiques. You also do not have to worry about having the same chandelier as someone else, they are all unique and one of a kind.

These antique chandeliers will get you many compliments. People who visit will think you paid much more for the chandelier than you actually did. They will be impressed by the amount of detail that was put into it. One key to look for though is to make sure the chandelier gives off the proper amount of lighting you want. Their main function is lighting of course rather than just for show. If you don’t do this, your ceiling will look strange with another light source hanging near to the chandelier.

This could be the answer you have been looking for if you want to redecorate certain areas of your home in a cost effect way. Antique chandeliers change focal points in rooms that you put them in. This will then allow you to also add other elements to compliment the chandelier as well.

The most common rugs used in America are Afghan and throw. Afghan rugs were first made in Afghanistan, hence how they got their name, and there are some of these rugs with many holes in them. One common point among all Afghan rugs is that they are made of yarn and are stitched by hand.

The most common pattern in Afghan rugs is an octagonal shape with patterns and colors around it. These colors are added to the rug by dyes and also some are made by the use of yarn that has been made with color. These Afghan rugs are very popular among American households.

These rugs serve a dual purpose as blankets and also rugs. Some people have used these Afghan rugs that are formed as blankets but they are very uncomfortable and scratchy on the skin so many people choose to use them as rugs only. Throw rugs though are a bit different and come in all different shapes and colors.

Throw rugs are made out of almost any material. Some are made with wool and others made with fur. There are also throw rugs that are made out of plastic. These are the types of rugs that you find common in an American household. People put them down in bathrooms and also in bedrooms.

These rugs also can be put right in front of a door to keep shoes and carpet from touching. Some throw rugs are put down right on the carpet while many choose to put them on tile floor to keep the heat in your feet while you walk across it barefoot. This is how the throw rug gets its name. You throw them onto any surface and they serve a purpose.

The other reason behind the name is because when they were first made, they used a material that decayed and then they were thrown away. So whether you put them on the floor or throw at a family member that upsets you, these throw rugs will work anywhere and serve any purpose.
